The Answer to Global Warming: The Genesis Flood
Many people today are caught up in the media hype about global warming. Where do you stand? What former Vice President Al Gore and other global warming crusaders fail to realize (or report) is that the trigger required for the kind of dire consequences they warn about is not man’s carbon exhausts or “footprints,” but a catastrophic agent.
Such a “Dooms Day” scenario needs a mechanism that generates an unbelievable amount of energy. Recognizing this, many secular scientists who resorted to meteorite impacts to explain the extinction of dinosaurs, now look to an Ice Age meteorite to account for the cataclysmic destruction of the giant mammoths, 18-foot tall sloths, glyptodonts (armadillo-like creatures 5 feet tall) and other megafauna. Such theories are highly speculative and, on the whole, terribly inconclusive. They fail to explain either the period of “global cooling,” or provide a mechanism for catastrophic global warming.
However, that mechanism or agent is easily found in the Genesis 7:11, which says, “on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth.” Most of the waters of Noah’s flood came from a tremendous reservoir of subterranean water. Colossal geological and hydrological activity was taking place during the first forty days of the Flood, causing the crust of the earth to fracture and an enormous amount of volcanic activity to occur. When Mt. Saint Helens exploded in 1980, in just eight hours it generated energy equivalent to 430 million tons of TNT, or 33,000 atomic bombs. It would be as if today’s 1500 active volcanoes all blew their tops at the same time! The amount of heat generated during this global flood was monumental, which, for the most part, was absorbed by the floodwaters. Now we have a cause that begins to explain the Ice Age, as well as a potential major global warming event.
A Plausible Cause for the Ice Age
The heat-energy that was absorbed by the ocean during the Flood produced another set of conditions that, according to creationist meteorologist and author Michael Oard, were a perfect cause for an Ice Age. Contrary to the numerous evolutionary theories (with no agreement) of how this phenomenon occurred, Oard’s Institute for Creation Research (ICR) publication, Ice Age Caused by the Genesis Flood, proposes a plausible solution to the mystery. He suggests that the stored heat in the ocean basins along with the cooling of the continents caused by the tremendous amounts of ash released by the staggering volcanic activity created ideal conditions for global cooling. According to Oard, due to a reverse greenhouse effect, the continental temperatures would have fallen as clouds of ash reflected the warmth of the suns rays away from the earth.
The gradual tapering off of volcanic activity would have created something similar to a “nuclear winter,” with peaks and valleys in temperature as the environment began to reach stability.Due to absorbed heat, the simultaneously increasing ocean temperatures would have accelerated evaporation, which turned to snow at higher latitudes, eventually forming glaciers.
Over approximately the next 500 years, the length and depth of the ice sheets would have grown massively, eventually stretching for thousands of miles with enough strength to carve out gigantic, U-shaped mountain valleys and basins in the earth. Rather than millions of years, this creationist model of the Ice Age shows that it all could have—plausibly—taken place over a period of not more than several hundred years after Noah’s flood.
Ice Age Weather
Weather patterns would have been drastically different during the Ice Age. According to Dr. Larry Vardiman, meteorologist and Director of Research for the Institute of Creation Research, the prevailing jet stream would have been at least ten degrees further south, creating lush green fields, trees and all sorts of vegetation where deserts exist today in places like North Africa. Earth-penetrating radar shows that in the past a network of large lakes and river channels existed beneath the sands of the Sahara. Geological evidence affirms there were monsoon rains and an abundance of vegetation and fresh water lakes there as well. Paleontologists have been pleasantly surprised to find fossil evidence of elephants, rhinoceroses, giraffes, buffaloes, etc. in this now inhospitable region. Man also previously occupied this area, as countless stone tools, pottery, pictographs, fishhooks, harpoons and other artifacts have been discovered, indicating that it was once a delightful place to live.
Along with increased evaporation from the warm ocean basins and the growing ice sheets, sea levels would have gradually decreased by up to 300 feet. The higher evaporation rates would also produce rainfall in the lower latitudes and plenty of water for animal and plant life. As ocean levels sank, natural passageways formed, enabling both man and beast to venture across Europe, Africa and Asia and to move into Alaska and the Americas by way of the Bering Land Bridge. Over the next 500 years, Oard theorizes that the oceans began to cool and reach equilibrium, triggering a “global warming” trend, during which the ice covering a third of the earth began to melt, oceans levels rose to where they are today and the earth became relatively dry again. For the next 200 years melting glaciers would have caused widespread flooding, and seasons would have been marked by definite temperature changes from cold winters to hot summers. In short, the Ice Age, which lasted approximately 700 years, was followed by a period of definitive global warming—as a result of natural processes.
Ice Age Civilizations and the Bible
I am convinced that all knowledge is bound up in the Word of God: “For the LORD gives wisdom, and from his mouth come knowledge and understanding,” Proverbs 2:6. While the secular world is perplexed, employing numerous, conflicting theories about the Ice Age, it is clear that the Genesis flood was the real agent. Indeed, several passages in Scripture refer to the post-Flood origin of snow and ice. A great example is Job 38:29-30, where God questions Job, asking: “From whose womb comes the ice? Who gives birth to the frost from the heavens when the waters become hard as stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen?”
Creation Studies Institute (CSI) has taken close to 12,000 people over the years on Ice Age fossil trips down the Peace River in Florida. We have gained a great deal of first-hand experience on this period in history.
Along with our participants, CSI has excavated hundreds of thousands of marine and terrestrial animal bones that testify to a recent Ice Age, including the remains of three, giant Columbian mammoths. The “Fossil Floats” are open to the public, and are usually scheduled for the spring (visit our website at www.creationstudies.org for exact dates). To make the impossible possible, evolution always needs to employ the “miracle worker” of long periods time. However, as the evidence mounts, even the Darwinists, who have believed in multiple ice ages dating back millions of years, now offer more recent dates for the end of the Ice Age to 10,000 BC.
In his book and DVD entitled, Ice Age Civilizations, James I. Nienhuis shares some truly fascinating evidence from mankind’s activities that corroborates a biblical timeline for the Ice Age ending around 1500 BC. Focusing on post-Deluge civilizations, the publication caught the attention of my former pastor and mentor, Dr. D. James Kennedy, who said of it: “A fascinating book on a subject which has been dealt with very little in our time.” Nienhuis complements the biblical Ice Age model by focusing on remnants left behind by man as he moved about during this unique time in history. Some of these included artifacts from numerous submerged cities (megalithic structures) found hundreds of feet beneath the ocean’s surface along the coasts of Malta, Egypt, Greece, Lebanon, Spain, India, China and Japan—Atlantis being one of them. Why are so many megalithic buildings found submerged along the coast? The answer has to do with the Ice Age.
As the warm oceans evaporated and produced snow at the higher latitudes, mankind migrated to southern latitudes where the climate was warmer and there was plenty of well-watered land. As the sea receded, much as today, man continually located close to the shoreline. For 500 years people followed the ocean, building great edifices and cities, until the glaciers in the north and south began to melt. As the oceans rose, these cities were buried under hundreds feet of water, where we find them today. Nienhuis’ underwater scenes of these megaliths in his DVD and accurate descriptions in his book make a compelling case for an Ice Age model consistent with the Genesis record.
More convincing proof relates to the building of the Pyramids, whose construction was accomplished with such precision, as many experts concur, it had to be based on precise astronomical observations. These people used the refined movement of the constellations on the horizon and the sun’s orientation to measure the wobble of the earth’s axis which is one degree off every 72 years. Nienhuis demonstrated in both the DVD and his book how they did this by applying basic mathematical principles that were available at the time. They were able to accurately calculate the radius and circumference of the earth. They developed a line of reference from the true North Pole and South Pole which today is called the ancient Prime Meridian in which the Giza Pyramid in Egypt is in perfect alignment. They used this ancient Prime Meridian to develop a sophisticated measuring system.
With an accurate picture of the size of the earth and with the oceans being 300 feet on average lower both navigation and mapping became a primary interest for these Ice Age Civilizations. Nienhuis points out that the ancient navigation maps show accuracies of east-west distances (longitudes). The chief measuring device used for building and navigation during the Ice Age was the Celtic Cross. This instrument, aimed at the stars with skill, gave an accurate perspective of longitude, east and west (one the most difficult dimensions to measure in navigation) and was used until the 1730’s when the John Harris in England invented the chronometer. Using the Celtic Cross it is believed that man could have easily traveled far and wide. Indicative of a definite relationship between megalithic structures in Central America and the Egyptian pyramids, ancient Mayan pottery also depicts the Celtic Cross. The Ice Age was a time where people where moving about, investigating the world and leaving fascinating artifacts behind. As Nienhuis demonstrates, these Ice Age civilizations clearly fit into a biblical timeframe of between 2000-1500 BC.
